Why make your New Year’s resolution about your kitchen?
Before we go into our list of kitchen-based New Year’s resolutions, you first need to understand why you would want to make one in the first place! Your kitchen is the heart of your home. Chances are, it’s so much more than where you cook and wash the dishes. It’s probably also where you play board games with your family, help your kids with their homework, catch up on the news and so much more. The more you can do to make your kitchen a happy, peaceful place, the better you’ll feel in your home, so without further ado, here is our list of the top New Year’s resolutions you can make for your kitchen in 2018.
#1. Declutter your kitchen.
The kitchen is one of the hardest rooms in the house to keep organized and cleared of clutter. Why? Because you are constantly using everything in it. It’s so much easier to keep your cabinets organized and tidy when you never have to take anything out of them, but when you’re constantly removing things and putting them back, it’s easy to let things get sloppy and cluttered. One of the best ways to make your kitchen more peaceful and more functional is to clear away the clutter. Go through your pantry and donate or get rid of anything you can’t use. You should do the same for all of your drawers and cabinets as well, and even the refrigerator.
#2. Get your kitchen organized.
Once your kitchen has be decluttered, you’ll hopefully have a lot more room to get it organized. When you know exactly where everything goes, not only is it faster and easier to put dishes, groceries, appliances, etc. away, but it will also make it easier to find things when you need them. But, in order to truly be organized, everything needs to have a home, and that’s easier said than done if your kitchen isn’t equipped with the right kind of storage. If a lack of storage is keeping you from being organized, it’s time to find a new solution. One of the best ways to add more storage to your existing kitchens is with kitchen remodeling, but you could also install more shelves, racks, drawers and more to make more space. Here are a couple of tips for a more organized kitchen:
- Make commonly used items easy to reach – There are bound to be a few appliances, tools or ingredients that you use more often than others, and they should be kept in a place that’s easy for you to access. For example, if you are a coffee addict, there’s no use in keeping your coffee pot hidden away at the back of a cabinet. Instead, put it somewhere that’s easy to reach.
- Take advantage of vertical space – If your kitchen in on the smaller side, it pays to get a little creative with how you store things. While there may not be a lot of counter space or cabinets, you can make use of the vertical space in your kitchen. For example, you could install hooks under your cabinets to store mugs or wine glasses. You could also hang pots and pans over your stove.
- Store similar items together – Make life easier on yourself in your kitchen by storing items that are alike together. For example, almost all tupperware comes with seperate lids. If you store them apart, you’ll have to hunt down a lid every time you need to use a tupperware. But, if you store them together, you’ll always know where to find the lid. Another great example is your coffee pot. If you keep it stored next to your coffee grinder, French press or espresso machine, you’ll have everything you need in one place.
