One of the most overlooked and important aspects of any bathroom renovation is the lighting.
It’s incredibly important to have the right kind of lighting in your bathroom. Your bathroom is where you put your makeup on or shave, and you have to have light for the most possible precision. Furthermore, the bathroom is also a sanctuary for relaxation and stress reduction, which can be maximized with the right lighting option. But, regardless of how important the right lighting is, you’d be surprised at how often lighting is overlooked during bathroom remodeling. That’s why the renovation experts at Daniels Design & Remodeling have come up with these expert ideas for lighting your new bathroom:
#1. Mimic or Utilize Daylight
Whether you’re applying your makeup or just making sure that you look your very best before you head out the door, the best way to see the true color of your hair, face, outfit, etc., is with daylight. One great way to harness daylight is with by installing a skylight or a simple window, but you can also use white-colored bulbs — like incandescent bulbs or LEDs — to get similar results.
#2. Layer the Light in Your Bathroom
Ideally, your bathroom will have three layers of light. The first layer will be ambient light, which can come from flush mounts, pendants or chandeliers. The second layer will be task lighting, which is important for grooming tasks, like shaving or applying makeup. The third layer will be the accent lighting, which will be used to highlight the decor and architectural features in the bathroom.
#3. Take Advantage of Vanity Lighting
For your grooming activities in the bathroom, it’s imperative that you have the right kind of lighting. Overhead lighting will often leave parts of your face in the shadows, making it difficult to get the accuracy you need when doing your makeup or shaving. With vanity lighting, which is mounted on either side of the mirror, you eliminate the shadows and gain an unobstructed view of your face.
#4. Don’t Forget About Night Lights
We all need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night at some point or another. If you turn on the light in the bathroom, it could interrupt your sleep cycle, making it difficult to get back to sleep. But, you don’t want to stumble around in the dark either. That’s why night lighting is a great idea (even if you’re not a kid anymore!). When you’re choosing night lights for your bathroom, choose a low-wattage light source that will either respond to motion or one that will be on all night.
