Bathroom remodeling in Northern Virginia is highly rewarding, but it can also be expensive.
With bathroom remodeling, you can take a bathroom that’s old, outdated, small or grungy and turn it into a stunning, spa-like bathroom that you’ll never want to leave. But, regardless of how rewarding a bathroom renovation can be, it doesn’t change the fact that it can be expensive. However, there are a lot of great ways to save more on your bathroom renovation. Here are just a few of them:
#1. Don’t move the plumbing.
If you end up moving plumbing fixtures around in your bathroom, it’s going to increase the cost of the renovation by a lot more than you might think. On average, it costs about $5,000 every time you move the toilet, sink, shower or other plumbing fixture. Save yourself the headache and the added costs by leaving the plumbing fixtures where they are.
#2. Think twice before tackling too much on your own.
A lot of people choose to do their bathroom remodeling projects on their own, believing that it will help them save money. And although DIY projects can help you save in many cases, if you end up making a mistake, you could end up with a much more expensive project than you would have if you had hired a professional to begin with. For instance, many people prefer to do their own demolition, but you won’t save as much as you think after buying the tools you need, and if you end up knocking down a wall that you need, or you end up damaging water pipes or electrical wire, you’ll also end up with a more expensive project all around.
#3. Look for materials at your local recycling center.
Did you know that you can get lightly used building materials and fixtures at your local recycling center for just a fraction of the cost of new materials? The one big downside to going this route is that the selection is much smaller when buying pre-owned materials. If you’re picky about the materials you’re using, or you are looking for something specific, start shopping for materials well in advance of starting your project.
#4. Install a solar tube instead of a skylight.
In a previous blog, we went over a few incredible lighting ideas for your new bathroom. Of all of the tips we gave, one of the best was to harness as much natural light as possible in your bathroom. Natural light is the best kind of bathroom lighting because it is the best way to the true color of your appearance. In order to maximize the natural sunlight in your bathroom, you may be tempted to install a skylight, which is a beautiful option but can be pricey. Instead, consider installing a solar tube, which is a flexible tube ranging in size from 10 inches to 20 inches that funnels natural sunlight into the bathroom from just a small opening in the roof.
