Home Renovation - McLean, VA

Case study

Name of Client: Rothrock Family

Location: McLean, VA

Type of Project: Kitchen Addition, Family Room Renovation, Deck and Screened Porch

Challenge: The Rothrock family 3 areas; a small kitchen, small breakfast nook and a small family room that were disjointed and not functional. The rooms were small and unable to accommodate the type of furnishings and accessories that our clients liked. The kitchen was very small, outdated cabinetry, very limited counter space and poor lighting. The cramped breakfast nook could only accommodate a small table which was shoehorned into a corner and no one could move around at all. The breakfast area had old sliding glass doors that were not functional. Again, if everyone were seated, the view outside was blocked, everyone was cramped and it was very hard to move around.

Solutions: We decided to remove the wall between the family room and the kitchen / breakfast nook and remove the “hallway” that connected the 3 areas together. Further, we added a small but necessary addition to the kitchen by bumping out the back wall approximately 2’. This opened up the area better utilizing the natural light from the deck areas and aligned the kitchen and family room walls. This created open wall space to the breakfast nook area to accommodate an abundance of cabinetry and counter space. The kitchen benefited from the natural light and opened the area to create a large functional center island. Now they could enjoy the view through the new larger sliding glass doors from anywhere in the space. There are now 4 functional living areas that are spacious and free flowing. Contracting to the previous chopped up unusable spaces. Our clients are thrilled with the new areas and spend much of their free time cooking, entertaining or just relaxing.

Materials Used: Crystal Quest Cabinets, GE Profile and Bosch appliances, Franke Faucet and Sink, and Caesarstone Countertops
