Home Addition - McLean, VA

Name of Client: Levy Family
Location: McLean, VA.
Type of Project: 2 story Addition with a Kitchen and Family Room, Deck and Stone Patio
Challenge: The Levy family was struggling with a painfully small galley Kitchen and the eat-in area was difficult to walk around. Further, there was no convenient gathering area to spend time with the family. The existing deck was small and worn out and they wanted to make the exterior more functional and attractive.
Solutions: Our goal was to lengthen and widen the existing space, defining the kitchen form the living area without the use of walls. In order to accomplish that openness without feeling lost, the design team used a vaulted ceiling in the living area contrasted by a flat ceiling in the kitchen. This created definition without using walls or columns. The living area also called for a vast window system the entire width and side of the room. The open feel was created when the team devised a layered girder truss system that could support not only the existing third story but the second story addition, without the use of a dropped down beam, columns, or walls.
Materials Used: Crystal Quest Cabinets, Thermador, Wolf, Sub Zero and Miele appliances, Kohler Faucet and Sink, and Granite Countertops
Client Feedback/Testimonials: “The design and construction team worked hand in hand to insure all aspects of the job were in harmony with each other and the existing home.”
Price: $350,000 to $450,000 range
Duration of Project: 118 working days
